Pre-prosthetic Surgery

Ridge augmentation

Sometimes there is not enough width or height of bone remaining to place dental implants after your body has healed following extraction of teeth. We can surgically enhance the area using sterile bovine bone as a scaffold for your own bone to regenerate. The after effect generally offers a stable and predictable site for dental implant placements that will support in the retention of dentures.

Bulky Tuberosities

Sometimes minor oral surgery is required to change the geography of the jaw. Large ‘bumps’ of bone (tuberosities) can unexpectedly remain in the jawbone after extraction, usually the body naturally reduces the ‘bumps’ once the tooth/teeth have gone.

These ‘bumps’ make it hard for your dentist to get a good fit with dentures and they would like us to help reduce and refashion the bone to a smoother surface. Once you have healed they can then start making your denture(s).

Refashioning of denture hyperplasia.

Denture-induced hyperplasia is an overgrowth of the soft tissues (gums) caused by chronic irritation from a denture. Treatment involves removing the overgrowth and allowing you to heal. Your denture is often relined or remade by your dentist afterwards to stop the irritation and overgrowth from recurring.

Vestibuloplasty

Sometimes soft-tissue surgery is needed to deepen/lengthen the space between the lips/cheeks and gums in order to improve denture stability. Sometimes the procedure is also done to help maintain better oral hygiene and access areas more easily with a toothbrush.

We can do any of the above treatments simply for you in a single visit under local anaesthetic or we can also offer an assessment followed by a further visit with IV sedation if you prefer to be sleepy during the procedure.

Please ask your dentist to refer you for any of the above procedures.
